It hasn't been forever ...

... since my last post. Surprised, huh? I know I am! Although, I suppose a week and a bit in blogland can seem like a long time.

I made the following card for a friend of mine in Canada. And it really has been like FOREVER since I sent her something to remind her that she is in my thoughts and heart. I was thinking how easy it has been for so much time to pass by in the whirligig of every day and, in that time, not reach out to those that I care about - especially those who may be far away. Definitely time for redress...

Gift card card

I'm posting a rather multi-function card today - firstly, it is multi-challenge card since it was made for this month's Elite sketch and colour challenges. And secondly, it hides a gift card under the Mellow Moss front panel...which makes the whole ensemble a gift card card! I've put a little tag as a hint to the recipient that there is something worth opening on Christmas Day.

It's all make-believe, however, since the hidden gift card is just an expired discount card, the card itself is a mere card front and, thankfully for the recipient, the card won't be given to anyone. The embossing, as difficult as it is to see in either of the pictures, is real though...truly it is...

Really bright delights

I'm gettin' old! Oh boy! was it a shock to realise that today. I treated my aunt to a Donut King buy one get one free coffee - does that technically qualify as a treat I wonder? Probably only if I nominate hers as the one that's paid for...I digress. While waiting for the milk to get hot and frothy, I had a look at the garishly iced doughnuts on offer and was struck by the thought, "How can anyone eat fluorescent blue?" I imagine a munched up portion lighting my oesophagus on its trip down to my stomach, with all and sundry privy to its illuminated descent...I have to confess to shuddering a little bit at the thought. Nothing that incandescent could be harmless to the human body - no wonder little children become hyperactive after consuming this sort of food colouring: all that excess brightness has to be converted somehow (basic case of conservation of energy). Anyway, it didn't seem too long ago when such colourful doughnuts would have been a siren song to lure me into throwing myself at the unyielding rocks of my parents' legs begging for two or three or more (in all different colours because at that age, every colour is a different flavour ... which is why hundreds and thousands are the ultimate gourmet delight for kids). Now that I am getting old, I think you'd have to be nuts to want that kind of dough. *sigh*

On the subject of brightly coloured, please dust off your favourite eclipse viewing technique for the following card. I thought that it was time to be bold and use my stash of Only Orange...I have to say that I think "Only Orange" is a bit of a misnomer - as in whatdyamean it's ONLY orange? It's an in-your-face RETINA-MELTING orange. If you ask me, it'd be more appropriately descriptive as "Over-the-top Orange" or "Outrageously Orange". *folds arms stubbornly* Anyway, I matched it up with some Bravo Burgundy because I needed a bit of bravado to use Outrageously Orange for a Spring Mini swap. In the end, I think that I liked it.

A tip with stamping on Only Orange cardstock - test your dye ink on some scrap cardstock first as some colours can look surprisingly dark or dirty on it.

Well, I've been a little punch drunk from demonstrating workshops, teaching classes and tending to orders (and backorders). Not that I'm complaining since it has been terrific fun sharing crafts with lots of lovely ladies and it hasn't been bad for my business either! BUT it is my excuse for being amiss in updating this neglected blog...

Secondly, I decided to celebrate the cheer associated with the new year (oooh! that rhymed!) by making a card with a bunch of punch. The punch bowl isn't visible because the beverage has already been doled out. I thought I should add that in case some of you start making things difficult for me by asserting that the drinks are actually cocktails. *looks cross*

Lastly, the cocktail punch umbrella was made with a couple of Stampin' Up! punches.

Look at the time! It's even past midnight in Perth (if they had stuck with our daylight saving schedule)! *grin* Sleep tight! Although I'm sure for most of you it'll be day when you read this...

Embossing's a beach!

I've been doing a bucket load of embossing recently as I've been preparing for various embossing technique classes including Cracked Glass and Faux Metal. Until Stampin' Up! Australia introduces Glassy Glaze, I have to stick with its clear embossing powder (EP) for demonstrating the Cracked Glass technique - which means six to eight layers of embossing to achieve the same thickness as a couple of layers of UTEE.

This really isn't a problem - after all, it is kinda fun applying the powder and watching in wonder when it melts under the roar of my heat tool. After the novelty of the first four embosses though, one's mind starts to wander. *apply VersaMark* What should I have for lunch today? *pour EP over project* Had leftovers yesterday...got leftovers today... *tap tap off excess EP* *return excess to container* *fire up heat tool* When this is done, shall I play drums or guitar on Guitar Hero World Tour? This t-shirt I'm wearing REALLY needs washing! Hmmm...wonder what's on TV? Is this the fifth or the sixth layer? *apply heat to project* Oooooh! Shiny! Gah! Hot! Quick! *point heat tool away while simultaneously pouring EP on project* And so it goes...and goes. ZZZZZzzzzzzzzzz...

Until the moment that I get completely complacent (or comatose - not sure which comes first) and forget to point the heat tool away while attempting to cover the project with a new layer of EP. An instantaneous cloud of EP billows over my workspace, transforming it into a sandy paper beach - even my right arm is encrusted with EP like I had been spending the afternoon making EPcastles. *sigh*

So, the moral of the story is ... nope ... there's none to be had. Bring on Glassy Glaze, Stampin' Up! Australia!

Scraptember

I hadn't intended it but September has been the month of scrapbook pages of my nephew. On realising this, I decided to create a row of it by adding one more. I remember being told at school that two does not constitute a row - as in two in a row was just nonsensical. But two in a row does make sense, right? After all, it just means one following one other. Anyway, being a particularly pedantic student, I had gleefully stuffed that "rule" into multiple parts of my brain for future reference. I am sure that those brain cells are now a complete waste of space and mourn the fact that they could have been better put to use for remembering:
• Hubby's mobile phone number when asked by an interested employer,
• the names of people that I worked with 10 years ago and bump into at the beginning of a long train ride,
• whether we have to put out the recycled or the garden waste bin this week,
• to post that letter sitting in my OUT tray for the last four weeks! Gah!
• when swaps are due...

Speaking of which ... back to the scrapbook page. This was made for a 6X6 swap co-ordinated by the amazing Alana, who showed great patience as some of us were kinda all over the place (including me as I forgot when this swap was due until a week before closing date and had to beg for an extension). Postmarked cyberstamp

The monthly INKlings Cyberstamp came around again and this time I got to set the challenges. Needless to say, it was just another excuse for me to do something silly in the name of trying to be funny *grin*

For the first challenge, I chose a colour scheme. I really hope that Kristina Werner does not mind but I CASEd her color inspiration - for this one Cyberstamp only. Please don't sue me, Kristina!

As some of you may already have read, I love shoes! I use to collect them but, now, most of them sit in storage, waiting for their moment in the sun when they go for a jaunt down the red carpet. (What can I say? I'm a big disappointment to these shoes!) Anyway, after rummaging through the shoe stash that stays with me, I found this pair that screamed out "Wear me to somewhere grand!" - instead, I featured them as inspiration for a colour challenge...

I hope to feature a round-up of the INKlings wonderful creations using this colour scheme if they post them on their respective blogs. In the meanwhile, here is my attempt:

Unfortunately, this card does not exist in this form any longer. After I snapped the first photo of it, the wind swept it up and dumped it on the grass that was left wet by the rain. So, it is a smudged remnant of its former self. Oh well! At least I have one photo - maybe I should scrap it up?

Auntie Lin Meanie falls from grace

When you see photos of my nephew, Shi Wei, you'll take his side, for sure! But I'm going to share this little story anyway.

My nephew is the cutest, cutest, cutest little prickly pear in the whole world. The first part is easily confirmed by checking out pictures of him. The second part relates to the fact that you really have to earn his affection. If you are not in his good books and you try to guide him with a gentle touch on his back, he will turn around, grab your offending hand and fling it away (did I capture enough of his disdain there? If not, just insert "disdainfully" before "fling"). But, if you have managed to ingratiate yourself with him by being at his beck and call and not squealing on him to his parents if he hits you, you've got it made! When it is time to put on his socks, he will come to you, sit in front of you and offer you the privilege of dressing his feet - I have to confirm that it completely sets the cockles of my heart ablaze.

By the last day of my stay in Perth, I had managed to inveigle my way to "Shi Wei's Best Friend"¹ status. This was no mean feat it had to be wrested from my mum who had earnt and held on to that title with tonnes of tolerance and lots of dark chocolate. I know you are wondering who feeds children dark chocolate? But it's my sister's rules! Anyway, so Shi Wei asked me to accompany him to my father's home gym, which to my nephew is the equivalent of the Forbidden Forest - scary and dangerous and, therefore, lots of fun! I was a nervous wreck when he clambered on to the equipment since there were countless protusions (OK...11 to be exact) which I kept imagining him hurting himself on. When I tried to hold him to make myself feel happier about his safety, he batted away my hands and told me to "Go away!" Yeah! So much for "Best Friend" status.

While on the gym, he patted this, twisted that and then slipped slightly on something round and gave us both a heart attack. No more Auntie Nice Gal! I lifted him off the gym and Boy! Did he protest! He wriggled, he squirmed, he shouted "No!" and, in the kerfuffle, my spectacles got knocked askew. He then proceeded to raspberry me which covered my face in a fine mist of spi... threw me back to the summer days in London when you'd get soaked by really light rain yet never felt a drop of water hitting you. I deposited him next to his mother (hoping that it was the equivalent of handing over the baton of responsibility) and proceeded to observe the following exchange.

"I don't like Auntie Lin Mei!" declared Shi Wei to my sister. [LM thinks: "Best Friend" status to Shi Wei Enemy Number One in eight seconds] "I hit her glasses off," he said while pumping his little fist into the air, "and then I pppphhhhhrrrrrrtttffff all over her!" he finished triumphantly. My sister then asked him, "Shi Wei, did you want a timeout²?" [LM: Sweet schadenfreude! I'm such a bad auntie...]

I'll have seconds

Our recent trip to China was awesome. But, now that I think about it, I realise that it was very food-centric. Sure we did lots of sight-seeing but that was just to whet our appetites for the main events - lunch and dinner! I suppose it is an indication of where my family's priorities lie, in general.

If you could overhear our descriptions of our trip, it would probably sound like this...
Friend: So, how was your trip to China?
Family: It was great! It started off badly, though, since we got a little ripped off by the tourist guide who recommended a Peking Duck that cost 10 times more that what we could get in Wangfujing.
Friend: Uh huh. And what did you see there?
Family: We went on some private tours to see the Forbidden City ...
Another family member: Don't bore them with the details - who cares what we saw? Just talk about the most important bits! The food was awful on those tours ... touristy all-you-can-choke-on buffets ... Yeah! DON'T go on tours - do it yourself, you'll eat much better.
Friend: Ok... did you climb the Great Wall?
Family: Sure did! The best part was when we got to the bottom and relaxed with a cold bottle of Coca Cola and went back to the hutong for a great dinner...This place was fantastic. Authentic food, and did we say it was sooooo cheap?!

This scrapbook page, the second to be posted on this blog, has the first picture that we took in China ... which was of our first meal in Beijing. See? I wasn't joking about our priorities. I've used a few items from the, as yet, unlaunched Stampin' Up! Spring Mini. The little polka-dot ribbon is attached to some hidden journalling which details what we ate (rivetting and top-secret¹ stuff!). Quickutz Chopsticks font was used for the title.

Memories, like the photo corners of my mind

It's about time that I posted a scrapbook page on this blog! Actually, it's about time I completed a scrapbook page full stop. It is kinda funny but I resumed papercrafting in the last few years because of scrapbooking. I accumulated lots and lots of scrapbooking stuff because the variety and loveliness of embellishments and pretty paper were mind boggling and the concept of journalling, meaningful. It also helped that this is one papercraft where you keep the results without any guilt!

Of course, there's always a catch. For me, it was the lack of photographs. I had many digital pictures of loved ones and special events but no printer. I could have gotten the pictures printed but I suppose inertia got the better of me and I used the stash to make cards instead.

Well, I don't have any excuses now (except, perhaps, the Stampertitis and a lack of talent). I recently purchased a colour printer and received some free photo paper just yesterday! It's a sign and it says "Make a heap of scrap!" So, here is the bottom of my pile:

The picture was taken by Hubby while we were in the Old Town of Lijiang, a UNESCO World Heritage Site in China. The town is a marvellous place to wander around in - so much colour and character in the people and the distinctive buildings. One of the highlights is to see the red lanterns lit up at night. Ah! Memories...

Kit one, pearl three

I can't believe that I haven't been parading my Pretties Kit around. If I could attach a leash to it and take it for a walk, I would! I suppose the fact that it doesn't have legs (or perhaps, more importantly, an animating force) could be a bit of a stumbling block. Then again, I would happily drag it around as long as its tin doesn't get damaged. Perhaps someone would offer to knit the kit a little outfit to protect it from severe gravel rash? Then I'd have a great excuse for some exercise. Walkies, Pretties! Here, Kit-ty!

I made the following card for the June Elite Challenge named "Perfect Rock", a colour challenge set by High Inkantationer Carol (another Carol-link!). The colours forming the challenge were Bashful Blue, Perfect Plum, Purely Pomegranate and River Rock. I'm dedicating the card to my Pretties Kit, from which I used three cream flat backed pearls. Being a hoarder, I'm sure that it hurt me more that my Pretties Kit!

I've included the close-up on the left for a better view of the embossing and one of the cream pearls. I reckon that the cream pearl tones in well with River Rock but I could be wrong!

You're not the emBoss of me!

I've recently been playing around with my heat gun...Don't we all have moments when we point them at our hubbies/partners/passing postmen and yell "Your money or the family jewels get it"? But I'm not talking about that sort of playing. I mean, actually trying to use it for what manufacturers intended - which is heat embossing, of course!

I use the term "trying" in two senses of the word...as in I tried and it was trying. I tried a layer of black UTEE on cardstock after stamping with one of the Mostly Flowers stamp set in VersaMark. When I set the heat gun on it, the UTEE bits started blowing away. The strange thing is you would think that I would turn the heat gun off at this point. But, no. Twenty seconds later, black UTEE all over my work surface, the carpet, on my new pale pink OTT-lite, in my hair, on my hubby (as he reminded me in the comments) and surprisingly very little on the cardstock. I suppose it's not THAT surprising when I take into account how much of the UTEE actually escaped.

The next experiment was with white embossing powder (EP) on dark cardstock. How hard could it be? The first layer was easy... a little patchy but nothing that another layer wouldn't fix. Pour more EP, tap, tap the card and ... tap tap ... tap tap tap TAP. Ack! Time to get out a brush and painstakingly sweep stray grains of EP away. Twenty minutes later. Blast with the gun and bemoan the appearance of black specks of UTEE in what should have been a perfectly white shiny product. Waaaaaaah! *sniffle*

Since the embossing was resisting my best efforts, I decided to try out an emboss resist. Hah! You're not the boss of me, EP!

A CASE, a colour challenge and ribbon

I was very impressed with a card that Belle recently made. I decided to CASE it for a colour challenge that was posted by Rebecca to keep us occupied whilst most demonstrators were in absentia (attending the Stampin' Up! Convention in Brisbane - lucky ducklings). The colours for the challenge were an amazing combination of rich and opulent hues with the crisp touch of black and white. To top off the card and celebrate Stampin' Up! ribbons, I tied on a little bit of black gingham ribbon. Oh yes! There was a lot of dotting with a white gel pen goin' on.

I've only just finished making this card. As it is evening, I had to use a flash to take a photo of it - which always causes colour fidelity problems. I then spend ages fiddling with it in Photoshop to remove the additional yellow ... and then over edit the thing. *sigh*

In any case, this is the first card that I have posted using Sassy Stems. This surprises me as it is one of my favourites. The colour scheme is a little radical this time as there is a rather abrupt change of pace from the pastel Green Gable to the vivid Pink Passion cardstock and Apple Green ribbon. Also, as I didn't like the look of Pink Passion directly on Orchid Opulence, I used a white pigment ink pen to outline the Pink Passion corners. What do you think of the end result?

The Blooming with Happiness set has the prettiest, most feminine quality to it (imho). It has stamps for girly birthdays, friendship affirmations and fabulous frock events such as weddings (pointed out by belle over lunch) and graduation formals. Lovely !
