Reflection Technique Class

I had a most enjoyable class the other night with some of my terrific customers. We used the Reflection Technique for a Christmas card and a masculine card.

It's really weird - I have been attracted to Season's Surfin' recently but couldn't really put my finger on why. The palm tree, in particular, was stirring something pleasing in me and I only realise why today. It reminds me of Queensland and the Whitsundays, where Hubby and I spent our honeymoon. Today is our sixth wedding anniversary and I think that, subliminally, Season' Surfin' was reminding me of the marvellous time that we had there and that our anniversary was coming up fast! To think, a moment's reflection would have revealed all of this beforehand...

The following card has acetate layered over the Baja Breeze cardstock. I thought it was an evocative allusion to the reflective surface of water and provided a nifty way of supporting the Thinking of You sentiment in StazOn Cotton White.

Stampin' Up! Australia's Spring Mini ends today and with it Season's Surfin' and the Cotton White Stazon.

Masculine card that's a breeze

One of my favourite sets from the Spring Mini is Uncharted Territory. It is a snap to make a card for men using it and I think it would be great for scrapbook pages featuring coastal destinations (especially those with lighthouses...was that a little obvious?).

Anyway, I love teaming it up with the gorgeous Parisian Breeze Specialty paper that is also only available until the end of November. The colour scheme is rugged and seaworthy and suits the images in the stamp set perfectly. The amazing thing about the Parisian Breeze paper is that every sheet has a side which is feminine with a masculine other side making it incredibly versatile.

Embossing's a beach!

I've been doing a bucket load of embossing recently as I've been preparing for various embossing technique classes including Cracked Glass and Faux Metal. Until Stampin' Up! Australia introduces Glassy Glaze, I have to stick with its clear embossing powder (EP) for demonstrating the Cracked Glass technique - which means six to eight layers of embossing to achieve the same thickness as a couple of layers of UTEE.

This really isn't a problem - after all, it is kinda fun applying the powder and watching in wonder when it melts under the roar of my heat tool. After the novelty of the first four embosses though, one's mind starts to wander. *apply VersaMark* What should I have for lunch today? *pour EP over project* Had leftovers yesterday...got leftovers today... *tap tap off excess EP* *return excess to container* *fire up heat tool* When this is done, shall I play drums or guitar on Guitar Hero World Tour? This t-shirt I'm wearing REALLY needs washing! Hmmm...wonder what's on TV? Is this the fifth or the sixth layer? *apply heat to project* Oooooh! Shiny! Gah! Hot! Quick! *point heat tool away while simultaneously pouring EP on project* And so it goes...and goes. ZZZZZzzzzzzzzzz...

Until the moment that I get completely complacent (or comatose - not sure which comes first) and forget to point the heat tool away while attempting to cover the project with a new layer of EP. An instantaneous cloud of EP billows over my workspace, transforming it into a sandy paper beach - even my right arm is encrusted with EP like I had been spending the afternoon making EPcastles. *sigh*

So, the moral of the story is ... nope ... there's none to be had. Bring on Glassy Glaze, Stampin' Up! Australia!

May it be divine or, at the very least, benign.

Happy New Year + a week, everyone! I hope that you have really enjoyed the recent festivities - it was a little welcome escape from the rather sombre economic climate that we are bracing ourselves for. I know this sounds like a romantic notion but I reckon that the threat of downsizing is actually a wake-up call to rediscover what is truly of value to us.

I think back to all those countless shopping trips that Hubby (even before he was Hubby - pre-Hubby if you will) faithfully accompanied me on where I was completely focused on the latest perfume collectible/shoes/clothes/bags/SALE whilst poor pre-Hubby would have 15 minutes of pleasurable distraction at Electronics Boutique followed by three hours of ... well... following. Can you imagine what sort of debt I accrued in doing so?

Once I take into account interest, it is a lifetime of going bicycling when Hubby wants to, playing side-kick to Hubby's leading characters in shoot 'em up computer games and watching every recorded episode of Air Crash Investigations. Funnily enough, though, paying him back means spending quality time with him and that's what really matters.

As for all those baubles that I used to collect, I still enjoy window shopping (and visiting our storage unit) once in a while. But, with the time I now have, I'd much rather make something.

Even though I made this card, when I was cropping this picture of it, I actually rotated it to make it portrait - and thought "Doh! That was completely unnecessary". It's probably because I have seen so many great cards made with the blossom standing up that this is almost...unnatural. Some of you may have cleverly based your frame of reference on the piece of Hodgepodge Hardware in which case I give you 100% *hands out gold star stickers*

Hubby is another case. When I handed this card to him, he held it such that the flower was upside down. That's just too lateral, Hubby! *stamps foot (no rubber stamps involved here btw)* *rotates card for Hubby* I suppose it is Karmic comeuppance for my previous naughtiness. *sigh*

Anyway, this is just a reminder that Bloomin' with Beauty and the luxe Purely Pomegranate Wide Satin Ribbon is in the Spring Mini and like all blooms, the Mini will be just a lovely memory too soon. So make sure that you finalise your wishlist from that mini catalogue and submit your orders before November 30 comes around.

Serenity serendipity

Things have been rather busy for me since the Papercrafts Festival. On top of the goings-on in my little craft world, there has been a couple of momentous races - one involving horses and the other presidential candidates! Amidst all that hurly-burly, I made a card using the Summer By The Sea stamp set and the watercolouring brought me a sense of serenity that made me feel as if I had a teensy holiday, away from everything.

Now, when I look at the card, I imagine being the lady in the boat, dipping her toes into the cool water, without any intrusions on her lake of solitude. Of course, to the right of her, off the page, would be a mountain of calorie-free delectable morsels and, quite possibly, Hubby having a quiet snooze. Aaaahhhhh!

Dad-ication

My father's birthday and Father's Day are very close together - in fact, every seven or so years they fall on the same day. And I reckon that's kinda unfortunate for him. It is like having your birthday close to Christmas ... everyone gives you one card and one present and says they've combined the two events (but never mentions that it is with a 40% discount *wry grin*). But that's me completely projecting because my Dad really doesn't seem to mind.

Hence, this dedication to my Dad: a one of a kind father, who is incredibly generous and charming...and interesting! He was definitely there for me when I was growing up and I appreciate the time that he always makes for us whenever we need him. A heartfelt thank you, Dad.

The little boy in "Summer by the Sea" could be my nephew and I thought it was just the right image for Dad's card since my father derives so much joy from his grandson. I'm sure they'll have a great time at dinner, together, tonight!

I've been admiring many creations using Kristina Werner's fabulous COLOR inspirations for a while now. I had considered joining in the fun but I was either too late off the mark or I had something else more pressing like workshops or swaps or washing my hair (Hey! It gets itchy if I wait long enough!).

This time I only have a hundred and forty swaps to make for the Sydney regional on Saturday so she'll be apples¹! Actually, choosing to take part in this COLOR inspiration just shows that I wasn't really committed to the swaps in the first place. Anyway, the snazzy colour combination chosen by Kristina:

Early spring clean?

This poor blog is full of dust - I really have neglected it for too long. *attempt to dust corner* *choke* *cough* *comes out looking like a battered fish ready for the fryer* I have a litany of excuses to trot out but who has the time and inclination to read them all?

But I do feel the need to share the following. Three weeks ago, on greeting my family...like most adults, I got the raw end of the exchange with my little nephew: I gave him two Disney DVDs and he gave me a virus-laden kiss. So, after that, I spent most of my visit in Perth at my parents' and my sister's houses watching the Olympics, or watching my nephew, hoping that my cough would go so that I could have a coffee in good company in the sunshine. No such luck, though, as my chest only cleared on the day I boarded the plane back to Sydney *sigh* Nevermind - I, at least, have a few fun nephew stories to share in the next few posts.

One of the good things about the Perth visit was that I was just in time to wish my sister a happy birthday over Peking Duck. I thought long and hard about what card to make for her and ended up using my new favourite stamp set "Summer by the Sea":

This card makes me think of my sister's inner child and wishes that she would let her out a little bit more often. Sometimes there's just too much responsibility in being an adult! Speaking of which ... I'd better submit this and catch up with my backlog of mail and e-mails as a precursor to a Spring clean.

Like a pack of wild animal cards

At least I hope my Stamp-A-Stack attendees will! Let me rewind a little. I'm having a Stamp-A-Stack of children's cards at my friend's place very soon and she has invited a few friends who are new to stamping. So, I'm really hoping that they like the pack of cards since first impressions are so important...which, btw, is why I recommend a Stamp-A-Ma-Jig.

These are the first cards that I have designed for children using Stampin' Up! products. I tried tapping into my inner child for an opinion as to whether the cards are appealing to kiddies. Tapping into my inner child is usually not particularly difficult since it tends to sit pretty close to the surface. But this time, it was completely noncommittal and inattentive - probably because I ate some artificially coloured sweets just before asking. Next closest option is Hubby since his inner child also likes to come out to play. His opinion (with my thoughts in parentheses):
giraffe card is awesome (oooooh! very promising)
great colour scheme (hmmmmm...that was a little analytical)
love the layers (oh oh! definitely losing contact with Hubby's inner child)
flawless (Gah! Hubby's inner child has gone back into hiding for sure. So, what does Hubby want?).

I guess it is time for some hypnotic regression. OmmmmMMMMMM...

Adjusting the landscape

I hate my landscape cards.

Hate is such a strong word, I know. What I really mean to say is that I resent my landscape cards. Why? Because when I post them on this blog, the Stampin' Supplies list always exceeds the available space next to the card.

So, to accommodate for the reduced height and width of the supplies list, the first thing I do is delete the first blank line before the supplies heading. List still dangling? Remove the blank lines between supply categories. *scrunch nose at scrunched space* When that isn't enough, I start looking for options to abbreviate:
Grosgrain Ribbon => Grosgrain
Hodgepodge Hardware => Hodgepodge
Cardstock => CS
Background => BG
Designer Series Paper => DSP

I really wasn't thinking straight when I did the second challenge in the INKlings June Cybercrop. In completing a Card Positioning Systems sketch challenge set by Carol, I kinda went to town with the supplies that I used...on a landscape card! Now there is big blank spot at the end of this post. *sigh* On the upside, this is the first outing with my Cuttlebug Shell Collage embossing folder.

1. OMSUWHTFM: Oh my Stampin' Up!, why hast thou forsaken me?

Greeting tag - you're it!

I know a few mothers who would really like to make cards to give on special events but ... well, with feeding the baby, being attentive to kiddies hyper-powered on renewable energy (can't someone harness that energy into something that they could sell to the rest of us?), picking up after hubby, and, on top of all of that, some are holding down stressful jobs - making cards must seem like a luxury. So, being the pragmatic problem solvers that they are, some of them have subscribed to the notion that a gift tag is all that is needed. A snazzy tag with a pithy greeting accompanied by the identity of the gift-giver and it is done! And I suspect that the really great aspect for these mothers is that there is so little room on the tag that no-one can seriously expect them to write much on it. Zero composition time! Hmmm...I wonder if I can come up with a blog on a tag...

Omitting Old Olive

My aunt asked me to make a birthday card for one of her friends who is turning 92(!) next week. Normally, my aunt is quite indifferent as to what elements should be included in the cards that she commissions. This time, however, she requested that the number 92 be prominently placed on the card. So, what better excuse is there for trying out some Stampin' Glitter? In addition to the numeric bling, the card has a couple of white eyelets set using a Crop-A-Dile and the embossing is courtesy of Cuttlebug Birds and Swirls and Birthday folders. A white gel pen was used to highlight the embossed sentiment.

I had considered using Old Olive for this card as I like it so much - it goes with all the cardstock that I've been reaching for, such as Rose Red, Chocolate Chip and, even, Kraft. But, in the interest of decorum, I decided to use Wild Wasabi instead ... as my aunt's friend's name is Olive.

Flashy Sassy

I've only just finished making this card. As it is evening, I had to use a flash to take a photo of it - which always causes colour fidelity problems. I then spend ages fiddling with it in Photoshop to remove the additional yellow ... and then over edit the thing. *sigh*

In any case, this is the first card that I have posted using Sassy Stems. This surprises me as it is one of my favourites. The colour scheme is a little radical this time as there is a rather abrupt change of pace from the pastel Green Gable to the vivid Pink Passion cardstock and Apple Green ribbon. Also, as I didn't like the look of Pink Passion directly on Orchid Opulence, I used a white pigment ink pen to outline the Pink Passion corners. What do you think of the end result?

Daylight Saving Leaves

Yep! It is that quirky time of year when we have Groundhog hour ... where we, in New South Wales, get to experience 2am till 2:59:59am twice in one day. This is the payout we get for surrendering the extra hour last year when daylight saving started. But I want to know where is the interest? Don't we get 10 minutes extra for saving these six months?

Boxing up Boxing Week

Boxing Week is coming to an end ... and it is closing with a Pyramid Box (quite apt in a macabre sort of way). I used a Mirkwood Designs pyramid box template with a couple of modifications. The original template only has one tuck-in tab but I added one to each side of the base to increase its rigidity and to keep the contents from spilling out. The other change was to insert a slot into the middle tuck-in tab and two slots into the matching side so that the box could be sealed with a ribbon. The inset shows the bottom of the box - where the sentiment can be found.

I hope that you had a great Boxing Week and it's only two more days before the new SU! Idea Book & Catalogue is launched.
